What’s easier to try for a beginner oil painter: portraits, landscape or other?

Posted by admin on December 30th, 2009 and filed under portrait painters | 5 Comments »

I’m sticking to monochrome so that colour mixing isn’t an issue and a small canvas so that I learn to focus on the entire canvas.

Landscapes or still life would easier. Working in monochrome is a good idea. You take color out of the picture and work with values only.
The biggest mistakes I see beginning painters make are with values. If you use photos as references, you get in trouble with values.
Working in monochrome will help you as a painter.

Who is that self portrait artist on myspace? details in the question?

He’s a guy and he’s amazing at what he does. He wore skinny jeans in most of his photos. I don’t really remember a lot because i just kinda browsed through his profile a long time ago because i was in a hurry. His hair is kind of longish and if i remember correctly it was brown. he’s also kind of skinny

i really need to find him because if a self portrait project for my photography class and i want to look at his photos for inspiration

What is your favorite portrait painting (e.g., the Mona Lisa) and why?

Posted by admin on December 30th, 2009 and filed under portrait painting | 3 Comments »

The painting must have only one person (no group portraits).

I think the Mona Lisa. It has such interesting history. It took DiVinci so many years to paint it. It is painted on a 1 inch block of oak. The smile is what he remembers from his mother. The subject is said to be the wife of an Inn Keeper. It was stolen once in the museum where is it kept now. Lengend has it the he arranged for a group of musicians to play during the sitting to keep the expression on her face.

Does anyone have information on Nancy Kefauver as a portrait painter or know about her paintings?

Posted by admin on December 30th, 2009 and filed under portrait paintings | 1 Comment »

I have one of her portraits and cannot find hardly anythinga about her success as a portraitist.

She is on a Life Magazine cover on this site:
http://www.2neatmagazines.com/life/1952cover.html
I think there is one for sale on ebay right now.

"When Nancy Kefauver established the Art in the Embassies Program for the U.S. Department of State in 1965, Philip and Muriel Berman were among the first to lend their art works, and they continued to participate in the program for many years. Series VIII. B is a collection of catalogs which include notices of art works lent to the embassies by the Bermans."

This had some interesting information on it:
http://dlc.lib.utk.edu/f/fa/fulltext/2027.html

"In the 1950s, Nancy Kefauver, wife of Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee, stood out because she was an artist with her own studio. By the 1960s, such business and professional pursuits were becoming more common. For example, Ellen Proxmire, wife of Wisconsin Senator William Proxmire, directed her own event-planning business throughout her husband’s Senate career."~http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/common/generic/SenateSpouses.htm

how much does pro myspace portrait photographers make?

Posted by admin on December 30th, 2009 and filed under portrait photographers | 4 Comments »

LOL… that takes the prize for the most oxymoronic term I have ever heard. There is no such thing as a "pro myspace portrait photographer". No professional photographer takes just myspace photos. I have actually never even seen any photo on myspace that was nothing more than a goofy amateurish snapshot. If there is a pro shot on there somewhere, it is just a shot that is being used there, it was not created by some kind of dedicated "myspace photographer".
