How much should I charge for an oil portrait, 42in. by 36in?

A man has asked me to paint a portrait of him sitting on a throne with a women standing by his side. I have no clue what I should charge him…I have never painted a portrait that big for anyone.
I realize talent and the amount of education I have had is a factor…I have only had a few art classes in high school, I’m 16.
Here is some of my artwork: http://xgirl-anachronismx.deviantart.com/gallery/

He has seen and likes the work I have done, so he is comfortable with my abilities.
I have estimated that that buying a canvas and the use of my materials will cost around $50.

I am mostly asking what I should charge for something this big and based on the experience I have.

someone once told me that they priced their work by the square inch. i thought they were crazy – but its not a half bad idea. figure out something that you have sold and thought that it was a reasonable price, then figure out how much it was per square inch. then use that as your baseline price. if the work is tougher – add some to your per square inch price – easier – deduct some. make sure that you are comparing similar media (oils are far more expensive than pencil drawings!) anyway – hope this helps. I find that pricing art (because of subjectivity) is extremely difficult – but a business approach like the price per square inch method makes it a bit easier.

What paintings are similar to Mrs. Siddons as the Tragic Muse?

I have to pick a portrait of a woman to copy in art class. I really like the painting Mrs. Siddons as the Tragic Muse, but my art teacher said that the background was too hard and suggested that I do something different. I’m wondering if there are perhaps portraits similar in mood. I want something that’s more about darkness and light…metaphorically and physically speaking.

What about Whistler’s painting of his mother? Also known as arrangement in Grey and Black http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whistler’s_Mother
Or Picasso’s Girl facing a Mirror – two sides of her personality – light and dark, innocent girl, wordly woman shown in this pic. described at http://www.moma.org/collection/browse_results.php?object_id=78311

Young photographers, what is a professional portrait?

Posted by admin on February 27th, 2010 and filed under portrait photographers | 4 Comments »

Another question for the newbies; not the seasoned pros.

its a portrait made by someone trained in portrait lighting

the first answer says some amateurs can out shoot pros – - – thats exactly where the new dsrl young photographers go wrong – very funny – - – - this is the sort of statement those with no understanding of light or photography say

im not a portrait shooter, i will bet any sum you want i can produce a better portrait than these amateurs that dont understand – its all about light

What should I do to prepare for my senior portraits?

Posted by admin on February 27th, 2010 and filed under portraits | 8 Comments »

I am (a guy) taking my senior portraits tomorrow, and I am a little confused with the process of it. Are we supposed to dress casual (like a hoodie or track jacket and jeans) to take our photos? Is the photographer supposed to give me an add-on tuxedo to wear for my senior portraits? I just plan to take the yearbook poses, because I don’t seem interested in the casual poses.

In addition, I have unmanagable curly hair. What I mean my unmanagable is that I CAN NOT get it the way I want it. It is not the type of hair that curls everywhere, but if I comb it straight, it is obvious it is curly. Is there any way to make my hair look the way I want it to look? (I want straight hair, preferably spikey hair).

Thank you!

okay so i am a girl first of all…
but for the place my brother went for his senior pictures he wore jeans and a shirt (no hoodie) it was summer
and they gave him a tux thing to wear and he got to pick out which color bow tie he wanted
for the casual poses he did that too but on a different day later in the year because our mom wanted them….
for your hair take your shower then i know this sounds odd for guys but blow dry oyu hair and if you don’t understand how ask you mom or if you have a sister or if you have a close friend that is a girl or a girl friend use her (blow drying makes it straght if your mom or sister or girlfriend or friend girl does it properly) then take gel to spike it and spike it how ever you like…

hope i helped

Star Portraits with Rolf Harris PART 3/3 | Portrait of David Dickinson by Andrew James RP

Star Portraits with Rolf Harris (2004) is where a group of three professional portrait artists are assigned the task of painting a celebrity from life using their preferred style. The star then decides which portrait to take home with them.

On 18 January 2004, antique dealer and celebrity, David Dickinson was the subject. Three artists were asked to paint a portrait of David from a personal sitting including Andrew James RP. Weeks later the finished results were unveiled at The National Portrait Gallery and David was asked to choose his favourite, which he was allowed to keep. Andrew James’ painting brought a tear to David’s eye as he was confronted by a striking likeness to his Mother. The portrait now has pride of place in David’s home.
