I alreADY SAID THE NPG WAS THE NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY, CAN NOW just say the NPG?

I’d suggest that when you first mention the National Portrait Gallery you put in brackets NPG, that way there is no confusion and you can keep using NPG

Wendy Wick Reaves, curator at the National Portrait Gallery, discusses the portrait that came to symbolize the historic campaign of President-elect Barack Obama. The portrait is on display at the museum. .

The piece, created by Los Angeles based graphic designer and street artist Shepard Fairey, came to the museum through the generosity of Washington, D.C., art collectors Heather and Tony Podesta, in honor of Tony Podestas mother, the late Mary K. Podesta.

This large-scale mixed-media stenciled collage is on view in the New Arrivals exhibition, on the museums first floor. For more on the poster, see the NPG blog at: http://face2face.si.edu/my_weblog/2009/01/now-on-view-portrait-of-barack-obama-by-shepard-fairey.html

I’m going to London next Wednesday for a day trip. Any ideas on good free museums, and galleries to go?

Posted by admin on March 9th, 2010 and filed under portrait gallery | 6 Comments »

I have a random day off work next wednesday so I’m going to
London. I have already been to Tate, Tate Modern, and Portrait Gallery and Natural History, British, and Science Museums. So I’m looking for something different…and free

You could try the Victoria and Albert Museum, just across the road from the Natural History. It’s free, apart from special exhibitions, and is great for anything artsy. I think the N H Museum now has its winter ice rink set up; for the last couple of years it had some stalls adjacent to it, selling all kinds of things.

Somerset House at Aldwych also has an ice rink (my favourite), but you have to pay to get into their exhibitions.

Just behind Selfridges on Oxford Street is the Wallace Collection, a fairly small art gallery. They often have a small, free, special exhibition downstairs. It also has porcelain and armour, and some very famous paintings like "The Laughing Cavalier" by Hals.

4th Plinth inside National Portrait Gallery

Posted by admin on March 6th, 2010 and filed under portrait gallery | No Comments »

On a Thursday night I went to the late night opening of the National Portrait Gallery. Having seen a recent collection and been amazed at some incredible pictures in the BP competition I walked out towards the longest indoor escalator in any gallery in the country. Beside it was a flat screen showing a guy drawing page one of an animation. I watched with interest thinking that he was in some studio where he had been filmed.
Just as I was getting into this animation development a gallery usher yelled out that the gallery was closing.
I walked out onto the Charing Cross Road and down towards the stop for the 29 Free Bus. (I saw ‘free’ because I seem to be the only one paying whenever I get onto the vehicle – whereas others drift on and search for a seat without making that telltale ‘BEEP’ that is so much a part of us ‘payers’ daily routine.)
As I walked down to the Trafalgar Square 29 Free Bus stop I glanced over at the 4th Plinth. There to my amazement was the guy that I had seen drawing INSIDE the NPG.
My goodness – a direct line.
Obviously I had to reassure myself that this was the actual person I had seen from inside and took a quick vid.
I must say that I have yet to see ANYONE who fills this plinth in TS half as well as King George IV fills his plinth.

I am doing an A-Level art contextual study on the role of women within the art world. On viewing this piece at The National Gallery I was particularly interested but have struggled to find information since.

What kind of information are you searching for? Just the painting itself? Or the woman herself?

How much should I charge for an oil portrait, 42in. by 36in?

A man has asked me to paint a portrait of him sitting on a throne with a women standing by his side. I have no clue what I should charge him…I have never painted a portrait that big for anyone.
I realize talent and the amount of education I have had is a factor…I have only had a few art classes in high school, I’m 16.
Here is some of my artwork: http://xgirl-anachronismx.deviantart.com/gallery/

He has seen and likes the work I have done, so he is comfortable with my abilities.
I have estimated that that buying a canvas and the use of my materials will cost around $50.

I am mostly asking what I should charge for something this big and based on the experience I have.

someone once told me that they priced their work by the square inch. i thought they were crazy – but its not a half bad idea. figure out something that you have sold and thought that it was a reasonable price, then figure out how much it was per square inch. then use that as your baseline price. if the work is tougher – add some to your per square inch price – easier – deduct some. make sure that you are comparing similar media (oils are far more expensive than pencil drawings!) anyway – hope this helps. I find that pricing art (because of subjectivity) is extremely difficult – but a business approach like the price per square inch method makes it a bit easier.

Who requested Margaret Preston’s self portrait and why?

I think it was the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1929 (??)
But why?

I think you are right. The trustee’s of the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1929 invited her to paint a self portrait for the collection. I think they did so just because she was one of Australia’s most influential modernists, and she was considered a spokesperson for Australian art and artists at this time.
