In oil painting how do you start painting a portrait on canvas?

Posted by admin on June 22nd, 2010 and filed under portrait painting | 3 Comments »

Do you sketch it in charcoal is that common? what do I use for the sketch or whatever.

i never use charcoal, not sure if it does anything to the paint or whatever though.

basically when oil painting, you can use a primer to prepare your canvas first OR you can skip straight to step two.

step two is mixing, in equal ratio, blue, red and yellow oil paint, or you can use brown paint if you so desire.

step three, using the paint, paint an outline (just lines) of the main subjects.

step four, use the same paint to determine where shadows are going to be and add them in with the same brown paint.

step five, gradually add colour and then continue on with your basic picture, then adding detail until the end.

using the oil paint as the outline is a fantastic way to approach it as:
since oil takes forever to dry, it blends in, as opposed to having pencil lines or black charcoal smudges on your canvas.
you aren’t changing mediums, and it is faster.

QUICK NOTE:
keep some white paint handy to go over accidental lines during the outline step.

hope i have helped. :)

Experienced artist looking to make a living doing executive and family portraits for commissions

Well, I think that a good way to start is to get a website. It doesn’t have to be too complex, but it will get you out there, especially if you pay for google to advertise you. You can also pay to put an ad in the newspaper.

Any ideas for my self-portrait painting?

Looking to do something abstract, and I wanted to add in a collage of different things from maybe a magazine but I’m not sure how that would work.

I was planning to do an outline of me either from the side or front, and I’d be outlined in a shade of pink and the background would be different shades of warm yellows and oranges.

How can I incorporate maybe song lyrics or a collage of items I like into this painting?

I’m using acrylics btw.

Thanks!

Make a collage and then paint into it or over it, just use an acrylic medium (like a liquid gloss or matte medium), and use it like glue to fix the magazine bits or paper to your canvas. Paint a coat of the same medium over the collage when you’re done, and when its dry you can paint on it no problem.

How should I go about digitally painting a portrait?

Posted by admin on March 19th, 2010 and filed under portrait painting | 1 Comment »

I am attempting to digitally paint a portrait with a wacom intuos tablet. I am a beginner. I was rather frustrated while trying to shade and add highlights to my creation when every time i lift my pen and place it near or onto an already shaded area it would darken where the two segments meet creating a blotchy effect. Is this something i have to just deal with or is there something I’m doing wrong? Please shed some light on this you digital painting gurus out there… Please. And thank you.

Use layers. And layer settings.

Also, use the eyedropper tool. There are many good video’s on youtube and such on how to paint with clear and clean colors.
