I am an amazing portrait painter and I want to start a business doing just that, I need some tips on how to begin, and you know, the whole process in general. If you can help me or you want a portrait I would really appreciate it!

My family and I have moved a lot over the years, so I have had to establish myself locally MANY times.

I always start by joining the local, state, and regional art groups. These groups have shows that you can enter to gain publicity. They also usually know the galleries and other places to get your work shown, other opportunities in the area, etc.

The other thing I have done is to offer a portrait for a charity auction which also gets your name out.

I have done demonstrations for art groups to get my name out. I have my work on the art group websites (a benefit of membership) and have gotten a few jobs from that as well.

Where should I go to get a self portrait painting done? Cost?

Im really intetested in getting one. I would love to have a nice size painting of myself. I know my brother had his done in pencil, and my great great grandmother had a self portrait painting, which we still have and is hanging on the wall. I really want one of painting. But I dont know where to go or how much it would cost.
Does anyone know about this kind of stuff? How can I get this done?

I would approach a local artist if I were in your position. I had a silhouette done of myself some number of years back, and treasure it very much. The cost of it being done was twelve dollars, including the frame. When I do a portrait of someone, it depends on the media being used (there’s even a considerable difference in the cost of acrylic and oil paints, not to mention if you can find someone who does things using egg tempera and natural pigment–which is possible if you want to find an iconographer working in the traditional format. One of my acrylic portraits for a 16×20 usually runs $120.00 while a pencil sketch runs about $50 for an 8×10 done on 9×12 paper.

How should I go about digitally painting a portrait?

I am attempting to digitally paint a portrait with a wacom intuos tablet. I am a beginner. I was rather frustrated while trying to shade and add highlights to my creation when every time i lift my pen and place it near or onto an already shaded area it would darken where the two segments meet creating a blotchy effect. Is this something i have to just deal with or is there something I’m doing wrong? Please shed some light on this you digital painting gurus out there… Please. And thank you.

Use layers. And layer settings.

Also, use the eyedropper tool. There are many good video’s on youtube and such on how to paint with clear and clean colors.
