Portrait Painting of Rihanna: Oil Paint, Color Pencils and Illustration Markers Joy of Painting

Posted by admin on March 10th, 2010 and filed under portrait painting | 21 Comments »

My process 1.) Sketch 2.) Illustration Markers 3.) Color Pencils and 4.) Oil paint. Sometimes I add even more steps with Photoshop, but I didnt for this portrait. I wanted to see how far I could push oil paint as a medium. I prefer painterly realism to photorealism (photo realistic stuff gets boring…..whats the point of simply reproducing a picture?). I was satisfied with the results, despite my unorthodox approach to making this….(painting? work of art? mixed media?….I dont know what to call it.) The markers were Prismacolor and Chartpak Ad. The color pencils were Prisma and the oil paint was Old Holland, Maimeri, Vasari, Bloxx, Grumbacher and Holbein Colors. I used Liquin as a paint medium. I used Flat, Round and Filbert Brushes and occasionally a fan brush (for delicate blending). This time lapse speed portrait consolidated four hours in to less than four minutes.

Where in Minnesota/Wisconsin you could sit for a portrait sketch or painting for honeymooning couple!?

Posted by admin on February 23rd, 2010 and filed under portrait painting | 1 Comment »

am honeymooning in Duluth Minnesota area and live in Eau Claire, WI. I want to sit for a traditional sketched or painted portrait but cannot find anyplace that does this. I found several that you send in photos and they sketch them, this is not what I am looking for. Please Help getting married in JULY!!

Some places have an artist registry. Check to see if there is an artist council or listing of registered artists for that area. A good place to check would be at the city and county websites for the place you are visiting.

when painting a portrait: is it cheating to grid out the original picture to get the proportions accurate?

Posted by admin on February 19th, 2010 and filed under portrait painting | 9 Comments »

i consider myself a very good painter, but not so great at drawing. i was never good at getting proportions. i am in an advanced painting class and i still grid out my faces and draw it on my canvas using the grid. this is how i originally learned to do it in my beginning painting classes.
also, is tracing using a projector or something similar cheating

Not cheating at all.
Most of the great Renaissance painters (and many artists since then) used similar aides and devices.
You do whatever it takes to get the result you want.

Why was the painting changed??????????

Interesting… there is normally a WWII map hanging over that mantel !! http://whitehousemuseum.org/floor0/map-room.htm

I’m not familiar with the portrait, but it is doesn’t appear to be Andrew Jackson.

I’ve contacted the White House and White House Museum to get an answer….

The portrait is of Benjamin Henry Latrobe: a British-born American architect best known for his design of the United States Capitol (painting by Charles Willson Peale)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Latrobe

I’m still waiting for confirmation from the White House.

EDIT: Still waiting for a response from the White House, BUT… I would imagine they swapped the portrait and map because a press-aide or the photographer said "Gee, we want to take it in front of the mantel, BUT that map just doesn’t look right… HEY, let’s move this portrait of the "old guy" in there… YEAH, that will look GOOD !!"

I remember on several episodes of the "West Wing" the ‘consultants’ from the Clinton Admin added in such anecdotes to the script… how MANY of those in the administration would be unaware of the history of various rooms and the art within.
