The studio will be reserved for newborns, babies, and small children mostly. I’m looking to compile a list of ’supplies’ that will be my foundation. If you have any thoughts or recommendations I would love to hear them!

Thank you!

Hi Lexi,

You’d got to incorporate all that you can to achieve the desired results in terms of the lighting that you may require. Soft boxes of adequate size and dimension, backgrounds, props, toys, basic amenities, and other essentials which make children comfortable and at peace within your studio.

I am wondering where I should apply for a photographer (only) job. I’ve heard that Sears’ photographers have to sell the pictures too – I’m looking for somewhere that treats their employees well, and offer a photographer only position. Oh, and please limit your responses to places in California.
Thank you!

The best portrait studio employer I ever worked for was me. And no, I’m not in California, and I’m not hiring.

Don’t be too sure you don’t want to learn how to pass proofs. Selling is really the name of the game in photography, shooting is just how you make the product, and many were the times I saw the work that I was being paid an okay hourly wage for be sold by a proof passer who was making twice or more because they were on commission. Fortunately, for much of this time she was my wife, but still…

What really bites is that she couldn’t shoot pictures worth a dam, because I could outsell her any day of the week, I just couldn’t do both jobs at once. One gets awfully tired of spending one’s life in a darkened room trying to get strangers to say "poo-poo." One never gets tired of making a sale, knowing that a given percentage is mine.

I usually do photos on location, but because it is dreary out at this time of the year I was thinking of converting my living room into a studio for a shoot. I have a sliding glass patio door that lets in decent lighting (if it’s a bright day to begin with), and want to use that for lighting in addition to three photographic lights i have. I’m also hoping to use a backdrop rather than use the space as is. Should I place the backdrop opposite the doors so that the light is going directly to the subject, or to the side?

If you already have three lights, there’s not really much need to use the window as a key light. I would say just block it off so it doesn’t interfere with your studio strobes.

If you insist on using it as a key light though, you will want the light coming through the window to be hitting your subject from halfway between straight on and straight from the side, depending on what type of lighting you’re trying to accomplish.

Good luck!

We have an appointment tomorrow but I don’t know the prices for packages or pictures?

Hello Jessica!

Look up the number for the Target Portrait Studio you’ve booked the appointment, give them a call and ask them. That’s the most direct route.

If that fails, I’ve found the following link doing a Yahoo! search:

http://targetportraits.com/

I didn’t have the time to dig into their site, but they have a listing of/links to their products and services; so they might have price listings.

I know that the Sears Portrait Studio lists prices on their website, so if the Target Studio website doesn’t have them, you might check out the Sears Studio site for comparison.

http://www.searsportrait.com/cpi/en-US/

Hope that helps, and good luck!

Photography has been a major passion of mine for the past 6 years and today I have an interview with a portrait studio. Should I take in a portfolio of my work? I don’t have many portraits, it’s mostly still life. But still–should I take it in?

If so, how should I present it to the interviewer?

i think everyone should bring in a portfolio. this way, you can hand it in to the interviewers while you talk, and its a good visual experience. it also diverts them away from you, in case youre one of those massive fidgeters or sweaters.
try to only showcase your best work in your portfolio, and don’t add too many photos.
id only show around 5-20 pieces, depending on how many you have, and how long you plan on talking.
if you dont have at least 7 portraits, play around a little bit. go on photoshop and do effects to the same picture. that way, youll have more pictures without rushing work.
good luck in your interview and remember to be yourself~ :]
