What do I need to start selling sidewalk portraits?

I’m an artist in North Carolina. I’d like to start my own small business; I’m planning to sit outside near the beach and draw portraits for people. I’ve been told I need a federal tax ID number. Someone else said I only need a state tax ID number, but those don’t exist as far as I can tell. The same person said I would need an ambulatory vendor’s license.
Does anyone else do sidewalk art? What do I need to start?

call your local town hall/municipal building. they will transfer your call to whomever knows and then you’ll have accurate info.
remember that sometimes artists and street musicians can get special permits since they are considered to add to the ambiance of a place. of course idk about where u live

I draw portraits professionally for people. How do I scan photos for the internet as examples?

The question says it. I draw pencil portraits for people, and am wondering what is the best way to scan/get a photo of them for the internet. Thanks!
What I mean is how do I literally scan the picture? Do I use a copy machine? Just a take a picture of it with a digital camera? I want a professional photo of it so that I can post it on my website.

If you have a social networking site account, such as Facebook, you can either post the scans into folders on it or create a page dedicated to yourself as a portraiture. There are even art sites dedicated to showing- even selling- of art. Deviantart.com is a popular choice. Other sites you can try are picture posting ones, like flickr. If your just showing examples of these works and are afraid of people stealing your images, be sure to watermark them with your name or the word’s "example"- usually in a program like Photoshop or GIMP.

There can be a huge range depending on the photographer and what you want. Prices could anywhere from about $200 to several thousand dollars. Generally you are going to pay a sitting fee and then whatever prints or disks you want. You will also pay extra for anything but minor retouching. If you have a budget in mind call around and see what local photographers are charging for what it is your looking for.

What lens is best for both family portraits and decent zoom?

I am getting the Canon T3i and it comes with a 18-55 lens. I am not sure if i should just buy the body and get a 55-250mm lens. Will this range work for shooting family portraits, close shots, and video? Other lens range?

For family portraits and your general telephoto needs, the 55-250mm is going to be good for that.

For close-up shots, however, you might want a macro lens. The least expensive macro lens from Canon is the 50mm f/2.5 for about $280-$300.

As for video, a lens with a fixed aperture would probably be best for that so the video doesn’t flicker when zooming in and out.

Do you like still life / portrait/ landscape paintings best?

I started with still life’s, and hated doing them..I was probably too young. Then went into Graphic design, Line Art for Advertising. then Portraits, pastel, always working at quick studies and life drawings. A few years ago, we had a garden and I got back into still life’s and have a much greater appreciation for all they offer, automatically, with so much to consider. The design of lights and shadows, highlights, color, negative space, just coming up with a good composition is challenging. I actually enjoy still life’s now, having a renewed appreciation.
Portraits are either excellent or disastrous (when I think too much, or try too hard-know the person too well). I love landscapes, and have done mostly these. No matter how they start, they end with a touch of surrealism, which makes them more unique and interesting….and personal.

My A2 Photography project consists of a series of different types of portrait photography, I’m finding it difficult to find a old well known photographer that took some amazing Beauty portraits, any ideas ?

Cecil Beaton took photos of the most famous and beautiful women (and men!) in the world during the mid 20th century. David Bailey famous for his photos of Twiggy, Chrissie Shrimpton etc from the 60s onwards.

they don’t… if a photographer is doing photos of people, they’ll ask for the person to bring their own things… (well, clothes)

The portrait studio owned by Sears calls themselves CPI Corportation, but they are a registered LLC. Why do they call themselves a corporation if they are really an LLC?
