I’m trying to remember the name of a contemporary european portrait artist, can anyone help?

It’s a man, still living, and he paints mainly mothers and children, I think but I could be wrong about that. All his paintings are set against a very dark background with the figures kind of emerging from it. He’s Polish or maybe Swedish or Norwegian -from that area of Europe anyway. It’s driving me mad trying to think of his name. Can anyone think who it might be?

Even though mothers and children are not his main subject I wonder if you’re thinking of Odd Nerdrum?

no way, contemporary art is so vast, if you can articulate a particual style, a name of a painting, or where you saw this piece it may help otherwise you should start trying to jogg that memory of yours :)
