Francesco Clemente “Social Portraits” at MARY BOONE GALLERY

James Kalm takes a brisk walk through a collection of recent portrait paintings by Francesco Clemente. Having embraced his position as the court portraitist to New York’s social elite, Clemente brings a sense of irony and a dash of satire to his elegantly naive depictions of the rich and famous.

I’ve loved Clemente’s work for over 20 years now. Met the guy in the 90’s. He owns work of mine. Ugh, this is some of the most uninteresting work I’ve ever seen from him…as if I mattered to Francesco anyhow! Thanks for the video James!

    I got into Clemente …
I got into Clemente after reading about the Deitch retrospective in JuliB, and being inspired to check out the show. Great stuff. People want to dismiss his stuff as style over substance, but that’s silly: The nature of art is that the style is the substance.

I think Clemente’s career is a marvelous testament to the power of having the right friends and going to the right parties. A glamorous wife doesn’t hurt either. Warhol’s society portraits always sucked and I think these suck even worse. I guess the difference is Warhol at least made some great art and Clemente…I like Basquiat’s “portrait” of Mary Boone as Mona Lisa.
