You sound like you would be a good candidate for learning how to paint wet on wet style. Bill Alexander and Bob Ross are well known for this method.

You could take a look at the work of Ewan Uglow. He uses the analytical techniqe of painting but takes it to the extreme with interesting results.
I imagine you would also like the work of Jack Vetriano.
