"Professional" basically means something that the consumer cannot provide themselves. A good professional portrait would have to be of a quality that the client could not simply reproduce with a Nikon D40 and a tripod. Professional portraits represent the client the way they want to be represented (fashion, beauty, conceptual), and are technically and compositionally perfect. The lighting is perfectly on par, and the photo has beauty and meaning- not just to the client, but as a work of art.
References :
A portrait where you dont take pictures of yourself in the mirror or with the camera held at arm's length away.
References :
A portrait that has been paid for of course. That is what professional means. It is a profession.

There are very good 'amateurs' out there that could stomp some 'pros'.

It's just a title.
