What kind of studio lighting should i buy for a Family Portrait Studio?

I have a Nikon D60 (will upgrade to a D90 if it is needed). Which company makes a good product? I’m on a bit of a budget, I would like to be Semi-Pro quality. between 250-450. I’m looking for the most for my money. ( I will spend more if it really is worth it) Thanks to anyone who can give a detailed answer.

If it is just in your house take a look at some of budget kits. They will be the only ones in your price range.

Do you want strobes or hot lights?

Strobes will give you nice results but they are little harder to use. You can’t see what the shots will look like until you take the picture. Not a big problem with digital though.

Hot lights are easy because you can see exactly what you are going to get before you snap the picture. The problem is that they are hot. Your models will melt under them.

For strobes a budget kit like the Interfit two light kit will be fine in a relatively small space. Cost is $299 and includes 2 150ws lights, 1 umbrella, 1 softbox and two stands.

For hot lights a Lowel Tota two light kit will be fine. It includes 2 lights, 2 umbrellas and 2 stands. Cost is $313.

You can then buy a background stand about $100 and a roll of seamless paper $50-$100. You can also skip the stand and use a couple of eye hooks, a chain and a piece of PVC pipe if you wont be moving it around. This will cost you about $10.

One last thing. The D60 does not have a PC connection to plug in the sync cables for strobes. This is not a big deal but you will need a Nikon AS-15 hot shoe adapter about $20 or a radio trigger. Radio triggers like a Pocket Wizard are expensive though.
