how do I paint portraits in acrylics?

I am looking for someone to help me out with painting portraits. Drawing, I have no (ok, little) problems, but when it comes to painting, I have so many problems. For instance, what colours do I lay down first, darker, or lighter?

Dark to light. Start with a dark mid-tone, then build on that. Paint with the light, so to speak. Go over the whole canvas with a color, then make a gradient with a slightly different color. These colors will help tie the whole picture together.

I actually use my acrylics like a sandwich- I paint a base color, then a midtone then the dark then go back with highlights and maybe some more midtones- try it out on something easy like a flower—I always had a time limit so this seemed the best for touch ups etc- I did 28 years as a mural artist in custom homes and models–
